GreenGrow Sustainable Palm Oil Production

Presented by Zubaida Rasul-Ronning, President, GreenGrow Ventures Inc

In 88 countries in the world, virgin rainforests are being sacrificed to expansion of Palm plantations for production of palm oil. GreenGrow’s proposal is to establish a 20 KM buffer zone between the current boundary between plantations and rainforest and divide the buffer zone into one-acre square lots, regrowing rainforests in every alternative square acre interspersed with palm trees. This “checkerboard” buffer zone effectively avoids encroachment on the rainforest while maintain palm oil production. Adopting the exclusive use of high-grade organic fertiliser on palm plantations would further protect the primal rainforest ecosystem and environment while maintaining palm oil production.
