- Scaling up strategies and innovative solutions to adapt agriculture to climate change in the Near East and North Africa region organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)
21 March, 13.30 - 16.00, Open Innovations Theatre
The Paris Agreement is a landmark achievement in the international response to climate change. For the first time, all countries have committed to take action. Country commitments are set up within the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) and FAO analysis shows that the agricultural sectors are among the foremost priorities in the INDCs. This is as strong signal to the international community: the agricultural sectors are central to the response to climate change.
The emphasis on climate action in agriculture was echoed by the ‘Ministerial Declaration on food security and the agricultural sectors in a changing climate’, which was adopted by African and Near East agriculture ministers during the 2016 FAO Regional Conferences.
Climate-adapted agriculture can substantially contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from short-lived climate pollutants, while also easing deforestation and improving the health of soils.
Innovative solutions for climate change adaptation in agriculture are key for the implementation of INDCs in NENA region.
The objective of this side event is to provide platform to the Member States of the Near East and North Africa region (NENA) region, to enhance regional dialogue and strategic thinking about the implementation of INDCs and access to climate finance through innovative solutions for climate change adaptation in agriculture sector of the region.
Target audience: NGOs, Government representatives, UN Agencies, National agriculture, water, and environment systems, Private sector, Media
